I saw Brown Sugar last week. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I loved the hip hop tie in and rap artist cameos.

Brown Sugar

Andre Ellis and Sidney Shaw grew up in the early 80's when hip-hop music was just hitting the mainstream. Some may have thought that hip-hop music was a fad that would never stay in the commercial mainstream; however, as Ellis and Sidney's lives matured, so did hip-hop. Brown Sugar depicts Sidney and Andre's lives within the hip-hop industry, as well as their pains and frustrations in their personal lives.

"You are the perfect verse over a tight beat."

Rick Famuyiwa, director of Blacktop Lingo and The Wood, delivers Brown Sugar. The storyline for this film is amazing. From the opening sequence through the triumphant ending, this picture reaches out and transcends to the audience. This film contains a tremendous cast that includes Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Mos Def, and Queen Latifa.

"They are going to be like Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder."

The opening interviews, the Russell Simmons party, the "slow jam deluxe draws" tape reference, the massager references, the bridal shower gift, Andre's breakdown of "brown sugar," the first Mos Def concert, the Hip-Hop Dalmatians scenes, the Rawkus Records reference, the "sell-out for business" conversation, the conversation during the wedding, the gully job scene, the workout conversation, the exhilarating 8-minute compromise, the Humphrey Bogart references, and the on-air questions were amongst the better portions of the film.

"You're dangling enough for the both of us."

Brown Sugar is an amazing film. It contains great whit, charm, and romance. It also possesses elements of suspense, comedy, and intrigue. Though you may feel like you know what is going to ultimately happen, there are unexpected scenes throughout the picture. Brown Sugar is a great date movie; hSowever, its entertainment value stretches farther than just the "date" genre classification.

"That's how men are, stupid and simple."

Grade: A
This movie is one of the best love stories I have seen on film. You don't even have to like hip hop to enjoy this movie. It will make you laugh, and it will even make you cry tears of joy. Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs light up the screen together. It's a beautiful love story which sends a message of how to friends can fall in love. It's just a wonderful movie to see, its not too raunchy on language or sex scenes. It's kind of funny how something like hip hop music can join two people together.
